5 Protect Coveralls.png

A protective coverall is a full-body garment designed to shield the wearer from hazardous substances like dust, liquids, and particles, as well as from general dirt and grime in messy environments. Made from materials such as microporous polyethylene (PE) laminate, SMS fabric, or Tyvek, these one-piece suits provide varying levels of protection depending on their type and construction, which may include sealed seams, elastic hoods, and anti-static treatments. They are a crucial form of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) used across many industries, from manufacturing and construction to healthcare and cleaning.

Key features and characteristics:

Full-body coverage:

Provides head-to-ankle protection, preventing hazardous materials from reaching the wearer's skin and clothing.

Material:

Constructed from materials like microporous PE laminate, SMS (Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond), or Tyvek to offer barriers against different hazards.

Closures:

Feature two-way zippers with storm flaps and elasticized openings at the hood, waist, cuffs, and ankles to ensure a secure fit.

Comfort:

Many designs incorporate breathable fabric, elastic waistbands, and features like seamless shoulders to enhance comfort and freedom of movement.

Anti-static treatment:

Some coveralls are treated to reduce the build-up of static electricity, which is important in electronics or hazardous environments.

Common applications:

Industrial and maintenance:

Used for painting, cleaning, insulation, and various mechanical jobs.

Hazardous cleanup:

Essential for handling hazardous waste, mold removal, and disaster cleanup.

Chemical handling:

Designed to protect against splashes, sprays, and contact with hazardous chemicals.

Healthcare and cleanrooms:

Provide a barrier against biological hazards and airborne particles in sterile environments.

To properly use a protective coverall, inspect it for damage, step into the legs one at a time, pull it up to your waist, insert your arms into the sleeves, pull it over your shoulders, and fasten the zipper. If available, adjust the hood and seal the cuffs and ankles around any footwear. Ensure the coverall is large enough for comfortable movement and check for a secure fit, particularly at the cuffs where they should overlap inner gloves.

1. Prepare and Inspect

Clean Surface: Place the coverall on a clean, dry surface to avoid contaminating it.

Inspect for Damage: Check the coverall for any holes or tears before use.

2. Donning the Coverall

Legs First: Step into the coverall, one leg at a time, as if putting on pants.

Pull to Waist: Pull the coverall up to your waist or bust.

Insert Arms: Insert your arms into the sleeves one by one.

Pull Over Shoulders: Pull the coverall fully over your shoulders.

Fasten Zipper: Pull the zipper all the way to the top.

Secure Flap: If there's a protective flap over the zipper, ensure it is closed to protect the zipper and prevent contamination.

3. Secure and Seal

Hood:

If your coverall has a hood, pull it over your head and adjust it for a secure, comfortable fit, making sure it doesn't obstruct your vision.

Cuffs and Ankles:

Seal any protective cuffs tightly around your wrists and ankles, especially if the coverall includes boot covers or thumb hooks.

Taping (if needed):

If your coverall lacks thumb hooks, a facility might recommend taping the sleeve over the inner glove to prevent gaps and skin exposure.

4. Final Check

Fit and Movement: Ensure the coverall is large enough to allow for unrestricted movement.

Overlap Inner Gloves: Check that the cuffs of inner gloves are tucked under the sleeves of the coverall for a secure barrier.
