General surgery packs are pre-assembled kits containing essential instruments and supplies used during surgical procedures. They streamline the preparation process and ensure that all necessary items are readily available.
Contents of General Surgery Packs:
Instruments: Common surgical tools such as scalpels, scissors, forceps, and needle holders.
Drapes and Covers: Sterile drapes to maintain a clean surgical field.
Sutures: Various types and sizes for closing incisions.
Sponges and Gauze: For absorbing blood and fluids during surgery.
Surgical Gloves: Sterile gloves to protect both the patient and the surgical team.
Customization:
Packs can be customized based on specific surgical procedures or surgeon preferences, ensuring that all required tools are included.
Benefits:
Reduces preparation time.
Minimizes the risk of forgetting essential items.
Enhances efficiency in the operating room.
General surgery packs are crucial for maintaining sterile conditions and facilitating smooth surgical operations.
To use a general surgery pack, confirm the outer packaging is intact and the chemical indicator has changed color, signifying successful sterilization. Then, open the package using a sterile, "no-touch" technique, unfolding the flaps away from the center and maintaining the sterile field. Finally, step back, allowing the surgeon to access the sterile instruments without touching the wrappers and maintaining aseptic technique.
Preparation and Opening
1. Check the Indicator:
Ensure the outer wrapping is intact and that the chemical indicator has changed color, confirming the pack was properly sterilized by the autoclave.
2. Prepare the Surface:
Wipe down the workspace or table to ensure it is clean and dry before placing the pack on the surface.
3. Position the Pack:
Place the pack with the outer flap and the courtesy tab (which indicates the direction of opening) facing you.
4. Break the Seal:
Tear the tape across the seam, being careful not to remove the entire tape, which could cause a hole in the wrapper.
5. Unfold the Flaps:
Unfold the first flap (the one on the side of the courtesy tab) and then the flap on the opposite side, pulling them towards the back to create a sterile field.
Grasp the tab of fabric on each side and fold them back, holding the first fold in place.
Pull the last flap towards yourself, ensuring that you do not cross the sterile field.
Maintain Sterility
No-Touch Technique:
Only touch the 1-inch border around the outer perimeter of the wrapper.
Avoid Contamination:
Step back after opening the package, allowing the surgeon to access the sterile instruments without reaching over the sterile field.
Dispose of Waste Promptly:
Place any discarded waste or used drapes into a designated bin immediately to maintain cleanliness and prevent contamination.
Be Aware of Contamination:
If you accidentally touch a non-sterile item, remove your gloves and repeat the handwashing procedure.
After Use
Dispose of Kit: Once the procedure is complete, dispose of the entire kit, including any used materials, into the appropriate waste container.
